Ligia shared with me a web service that some students are using to study. It is really well done for a free service and I like it. www.StudyBlue.com …and you can (and maybe should) make an account so you can share materials with them, and/or see what materials students are sharing.
Here are the cool factors:
• Students can create a “backpack” of classes and add flashcards, notes, etc to their classes.
• As they study it keeps statistics on their progress over time
• It has an “app” so they can study from their smart phone anywhere/anytime
• It sends reminders to their phone that it’s time to study
• It sends a message to their facebook account that they are busy studying to decrease interruptions
• They can add images and audio to the cards (think biology or Spanish)
• Flashcard sets can’t get lost or misplaced or “left at my dad’s house”
• They can study “offline” if no internet accress
Here are the things to keep in mind:
• They can join classes already existing and see study materials shared by classmates if they are marked “public”
• It is really motivating and cool. And not childish looking.
• Since you may require individually constructed flashcards, have them keep them “private” and they can show you on their laptop. The “author” is visible.
• If you want students to take turns making sets for the class, they would mark them “public” and the whole class could access them and study.
If your students use flashcards you can create an account and create your class (some already exist, like Biology and Moral Development). Then you can see what they are posting and studying.
